The TL;DR
Date Drop's is designed to be the anti dating app. We don't want to keep you swiping - we want you to have better dates. That means respecting your time, your values, and especially your privacy.
To make that good matches possible, we ask you some quite personal questions and process your information carefully. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and how you stay in control.
What Information Do We Collect?
When you participate in Date Drop, we collect:
- Contact information: your name, university email, and phone number (to text your match).
- University verification data: proof you're an active student (via your school's authentication provider).
- Questionnaire responses: your answers to our compatibility questions, covering values, preferences, and leanings.
- Participation logs: whether you opt in or out each week.
- Match outcome feedback: self-reported feedback about how your date went. This is tied to your profile to help us improve future matches.
- Analytics data: limited and anonymized usage data via Posthog, such as whether you open emails or complete your questionnaire.
- AI voice chat data: Date Drop uses a short AI voice chat as part of onboarding and matching. During the voice chat, we process the audio and a transcript of what you say to derive matching data — things like communication style, personal values, and compatibility cues that are hard to capture in a form. We do not store the raw audio recording. We store the transcript and derived data used for matching.
- Emails and texts: we may send you reminders, matches, and updates through Resend (email) and Twilio (SMS).
How Do We Use This Information?
- Weekly matching: When you opt in, we use your questionnaire responses and other matching data to select one match each week.
- AI voice chat data: We process the voice chat and transcript to understand communication style and generate compatibility data that improve matching.
- Communication: We use your contact info to deliver your match and send reminders.
- Feedback learning: Self-reported outcomes are tied to your profile so we can get better at matching you, not just the community at large.
- Aggregated insights: We may publish anonymized, aggregate findings (e.g., "Engineering students on Date Drop are more likely to want long-term relationships").
- Analytics: We use Posthog data to improve Date Drop's design and experience.
- Data separation for privacy: Your questionnaire responses and personally identifiable information (like your name, email, and phone number) are stored in completely separate database tables, linked only by a randomized unique ID. This means your answers are never directly tied to your identity in storage. Only the small Date Drop engineering team manages these systems; campus leaders at your university never see individual responses.
We do not sell or share your personal information with advertisers or schools.
AI Voice Chat Consent
The AI voice chat is part of using Date Drop. Before it begins, we show a notice explaining that we will process the voice chat and transcript to derive data for matching.
By clicking Start chat, you consent to Date Drop processing the voice chat and its transcript to derive data for weekly matching. If you do not consent, you won't be able to complete the voice chat and use Date Drop.
Biometric Information (California & Illinois)
The AI voice chat helps us collect data that's essential for matching. Some privacy laws treat certain kinds of identifiers derived from our audio processing as "biometric information."
We do not use these identifiers to advertise to you, and we do not sell them.
For California residents: Information derived from the voice chat may be treated as "sensitive personal information" under CCPA/CPRA. You can request access or deletion, and you may have the right to limit the use or disclosure of sensitive personal information where applicable.
For Illinois residents: Illinois law (BIPA) regulates certain biometric identifiers and information. By starting the voice chat and using Date Drop, you provide written consent (including electronic consent) for us to collect, store, and use identifiers derived from the voice chat for matching and personalization, to the extent those identifiers are treated as biometric information under Illinois law. In all cases, we delete them no later than 1 year after the purpose expires, and for Illinois we also comply with BIPA's retention/destruction requirements.
Retention: We retain these identifiers only as long as necessary for their original purpose. We permanently delete them upon account deletion, upon your request, or when they are no longer needed for their original purpose, and in all cases no later than one year after your last use of Date Drop.
For biometric-related requests, contact henry@relationship.co.
How Is This Information Protected?
- Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (Supabase, Twilio, Posthog, Resend).
- Access control: Only the Date Drop engineering team has access to raw responses. Campus leaders cannot view participant data.
- Best practices: We secure our accounts with long, unique passphrases and multi-factor authentication.

- Report matches: Let us know if something feels off so we can improve your experience.
- Delete account: You can delete your account any time by going to the Profile tab, scrolling all the way down, and clicking Delete Account.
We do not currently support downloading/exporting your questionnaire answers, so if you'd like a record, save them before submitting.
For privacy-related requests, contact henry@relationship.co.
Data Retention
- Active data: We keep participant data indefinitely while your account is active to provide you with matches.
- Biometric information: As described above, we delete this data when it's no longer needed for its original purpose, upon request, and no later than one year after your last use of Date Drop.
- Deleted accounts: When you request deletion, we fully remove your account data from Supabase, Posthog, and related services. Some technical system logs may persist temporarily for security.
